ATHENS, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team picked up their eighth-straight win with a 94-83 victory earlier today at Concord. The Lady Pioneers shot 44% from the field and forced the Mountain Lions into 31 turnovers.
Hya Haywood got the scoring started right off the tip with a layup just five seconds in. Though the game started out fast, both teams couldn't gain a lead any bigger than four in the opening quarter with the Mountain Lions eventually holding onto a small 19-18 advantage going into the second quarter. The 2Q was a close battle as well with the Lady Pioneers once again forcing CU into nearly 10 turnovers for the quarter, however Concord shot 53% from the field in the stanza to make up for the lost possessions. GSU was able to take the lead going into the locker room, 41-39.
The Lady Pioneers ramped up the offense and the pressure in the third quarter, scoring 28 points and forcing 10 turnovers to build a lead as big as 10. Concord connected on a three-pointer as the buzzer rang to trim the deficit down to seven (69-62) heading into the final quarter. As the fourth quarter progressed, Glenville gained control and held onto their biggest advantage of the game at 13. CU had a few opportunities late in the game to make it closer but couldn't convert as the Lady Pioneers finished out the 94-83 win.
The Final Stats
Lauren Calhoun and Chalon Miles led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points each. Hya Haywood and Dream Cherry poured in 16 points apiece as well. Miles and Zhordan Shannon led the team in rebounds with both grabbing seven boards. Shannon had five steals and Haywood dished out four assists in the victory.
Jaisah Smith led all scorers with 20 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Abbie Smith had a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Deja Atkinson and Maddie Ratcliff both had three assists in the Mountain Lions loss.
