ATHENS, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team survived at Concord earlier today, scoring 14 unanswered points to spoil the Mountain Lions homecoming, 24-21. It was an offensive bout at Callaghan Stadium, as the teams combined for 742 yards of total offense.
1st Quarter
Concord used a short field in their first drive to get in scoring position, however they came up empty when their 39-yard field goal was blocked my
Isaiah Macklin. Both teams weren't able to muster any offense together on their following drives until the Pioneers nearly went endzone to endzone in one drive, but a fumble at the Concord three-yard line ended the possession.
2nd Quarter
The Mountain Lions opened up the second quarter with an 80-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard TD run from JQ Brown. GSU answered right back on the ensuing possession as
Anthony Garrett was able to find
Naseem Pacheco from 10 yards out, tying it at 7-7. For a second-consecutive drive, CU found the endzone, this time on a 12-yard pass to the tight end. Glenville State put together a solid drive before the half ended, resulting in a 34-yard field goal from
Brody Layman before time expired, setting the score at 14-10.
3rd Quarter
After forcing the Pioneers to go three and out, Concord's JQ Brown broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run to make it 21-10 Mountain Lions. A few drives later, CU was threatening to score again with the ball at the GSU 10-yard line. Freshman
Jaiden McLendon Parker notched his second interception in as many weeks, bailing the Pioneers out. The turnover bug then hurt GSU as
Anthony Garrett's pass was intercepted by Khwan Mickens. Two plays later,
Brogan Brown recovered a CU fumble to put the ball back in the Pioneers' hands. This proved to be crucial for GSU as Garrett connected with
Tariq Miller from nine yards out to trim the deficit to 21-17 before the final quarter of play.
4th Quarter
The Pioneer defense made a stop again, allowing Glenville State to take the lead on another
Anthony Garrett-
Tariq Miller connection. Down 24-21, Concord had two opportunities to either tie or regain the lead. A blocked field goal by Sean Scot with just under seven minutes left halted one opportunity and
Jamair Diaz stopped their second chance with a strip sack fumble on fourth down, securing the 24-21 win for the Pioneers.
