WHEELING, W.Va. – The Glenville State Football team used a late touchdown in the fourth quarter and a strip sack to secure their fifth league victory and remain tied for 2
nd place in the Mountain East Conference today. GSU defeated Wheeling, 28-21, on the road at Bishop-Schmitt Field.
1st Quarter
The Pioneers had their best start of the season, using trickery to gain 37 yards on the opening play with a pass from receiver
Tariq Miller to quarterback
Anthony Garrett. Later in the drive, Garrett found
Marion Lawson in the flat to put the Pioneers up, 7-0. Following a three and out for Wheeling, GSU scored on their second-consecutive drive with a 15-yard TD connection between Garrett and
Tariq Meredith.
2nd Quarter
Sean Scott put the Pioneers in prime position when he picked off Landon Lutz at the Wheeling 25-yard line. Glenville State backed themselves up to the 11 on a pair of negative runs and a false start, however Garrett and Meredith connected once again for a GSU touchdown, making it 21-0 Pioneers. The Cardinals were finally able to put points up on the board late in the quarter on a 19-yard TD pass as Glenville State led 21-7 at the break.
3rd Quarter
The storyline of the third quarter was turnovers, as both teams were turned over by either an interception or fumble and each squad had a turnover on downs. The Pioneers held onto a 21-7 advantage heading into the final quarter.
4th Quarter
Just five plays into the fourth, Wheeling trimmed the GSU lead to just one score on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Luntz to Tre Holloway. The Cardinals defense forced a Pioneer punt and eventually marched down the field, scoring yet again to tie the game at 21 all. Glenville State answered back with a near five-minute drive that was capped off by Garrett finding
Naseem Pacheco in the endzone to give GSU their lead back. A sack fumble by
Joshua Carr and a first down run by Garrett sealed the deal, securing the 28-21 victory for the Pioneers.
