INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Basketball team fell to West Virginia State in a tightly contested afternoon contest today, 97-95. Though close the entire way, Glenville State was unable to secure the victory and recorded their second loss of the season (4-2, 1-1 MEC), while the West Virginia State holds onto a still undefeated record (4-0, 1-0 MEC).
The game was back-and-forth from tip-off, with the Lady Pioneers and Yellow Jackets trading runs. West Virginia State ended the first quarter on a hot streak, leading 30-22. The Lady Pioneers stormed back and took the lead again early in the second quarter. Multiple lead changes and ties would see the WVSU carry a 51-49 advantage into the locker room.
The trend of alternating success would continue out of the break with neither team holding more than a five-point lead throughout the third quarter. A late three pointer by West Virginia State knotted the two teams at 70 as the game entered the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Glenville State found early success, holding a lead as high as 10 before the Yellow Jackets would again tie the game at 91 with just under two minutes to go. With the teams stalemated at 95 in the final minute, two free-throws proved to be the difference with West Virginia State securing the close victory.

The Yellow Jackets saw sound contributions from several players, with six scoring in double figures. Forward Emyah Fortenberry led the team with 18 points and was also the Yellow Jackets leading rebounder with 13 boards on the day. Guard Zakorrah Russell supplied 15 points and 10 rebounds as well.
Glenville State
The Lady Pioneers also saw an efficient day from several players, with five scoring in double figures. Freshman guard Nwando Okigbo led all scorers with 19 while also leading the team with 12 rebounds. Senior guard Dream Cherry and freshman guard Kenyah Stubbs also had a solid day, scoring 15 and 13, respectively. Senior guard Tynasia Bunting extended her streak of double-digit games to five with 10 points. Junior guard Stevi Yancy rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, also addig three steals in the loss.
