GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Men's Basketball team went punch for punch with 20th ranked West Liberty tonight in the Waco Center, eventually falling to the Hilltoppers 77-73. The Pioneers shot 48% from the field but were 29% from behind the arc. WLU produced 41 bench points in the win.
GSU held onto a 15-8 lead at the under 15-minute media timeout and had a chance to grow their advantage to double digits with around 12 minutes left, however West Liberty caught a break and went on a 19-6 run to take the lead at 33-28. The Pioneers then had a span of over five minutes without points but WLU didn't capitalize off the offensive drought, only leading 40-35 at halftime.
After the Hilltoppers went up by eight out of the locker room, Glenville State quickly came back to tie it all up at 46. From there, it would stay a one or two possession game for the remainder of the contest with GSU regaining the lead (63-62) with seven minutes left. As the game came down to the final possessions, the blue and white were down three and had a chance to tie it up with under a minute left. A defensive stop and key free throws by WLU proved crucial at the end as the Hilltoppers closed it out at 77-73.
The Final Stats
Dominiq Penn and Devin Collins had 13 points each while Jordan Turbo Smith and Trevor Chandler both had 12 points in the loss. DiShon DD Daniels added 10 points. Smith led the team in assists (eight) and rebounds (six) as well. Rye Gadd chimed in with nine points and four boards.
The game's leading scorer was Chaz Hinds, who scored 14 points on 50% shooting from the field. Finley Woodward (13 points), Zach Rasile (11 points) and Ben Sarson (10 points) were all in double figures for the Hilltoppers. Woodward led the team in assists with five and John Korte led the rebounding efforts with six.
