GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Glenville State Men's Basketball team had their game with Wheeling go down to the wire tonight, losing 80-75 on the road. The Pioneers shot better than the Cardinals, going 40% from the field and behind the arc but Wheeling went 16-19 from the free throw line, which ended up being crucial late.
The teams went basket for basket for the first eight minutes of the game but Wheeling was able to create a small seven-point advantage (23-16). The lead eventually grew to nine, however the Pioneers finished the first half out strong, trimming the deficit down to two. WU held GSU scoreless for the final minute-plus, taking a 36-31 lead at the break.
Glenville State kept the game within 10 in the second half until they were able to tie it up at 45 all with 12 minutes left. Three minutes later, Dominiq Penn put the Pioneers up by eight with a layup, giving the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game. Wheeling quickly came back to take the advantage, setting up a tight ending. The game was tied with two and a half minutes left, however WU was able hold the blue and white scoreless for over two minutes, pulling away 80-75.
The Final Stats
Dominiq Penn led the Pioneers with 20 points and three assists. Devin Collins (15 points) and Jordan Turbo Smith (14 points) added more offense. Rye Gadd grabbed a team leading nine rebounds and Trevor Chandler had seven boards.
Marcus Johnson led all scorers with 26 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Sean Ealy finished with 17 points and S.J. Hutchinson added 13 points. Tee Harris dished out seven assists in the win.
