WHEELING, W.Va. - The Glenville State Women's Basketball team had to go to overtime to defeat Wheeling 97-90 on the road today. The Lady Pioneers shot 42% from the field and knocked down 12 three pointers en route to the big MEC road win.
By the time of the under-5 media timeout, the Lady Pioneers had jumped out to a 17-6 advantage. They were able to keep the Cardinals at bay for the remainder of the quarter, holding onto a 28-16 lead by the end of the first quarter. A 13-2 run to begin the second quarter allowed Wheeling to get right back into it, only trailing 33-32 with six minutes left in the half. The run allowed WU to only trail by four (48-44) going into the locker room.
GSU looked to have control of the game by the fourth quarter, leading by 11 right before the last media timeout of the game. However, the Cardinals made another big run like they did in the second quarter, tying it up at 83 all with 23 seconds left. Neither team got a shot off in the closing seconds of regulation, sending the game into overtime. After trading the lead off, Glenville was able to hold the Cardinals scoreless for the last minute and a half, pulling away 97-90.
The Final Stats
Hya Haywood scored a game-high 33 points, shooting 11-12 from the free throw line and grabbing a team leading 12 rebounds. Lauren Calhoun (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Dream Cherry (14 points, 12 rebounds) were key in today's victory as well. Chalon Miles finished with 11 points and Sanaiya Morris had 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
Shamia Strayhorn led Wheeling with 21 points and nine boards. Briarley Rogers also grabbed nine rebounds and added 18 points in the loss. Three other Cardinals were in double figures.
