WICHITA, Kan. - The Glenville State Wrestling team had Gavin Quiocho and Gaetano DeLeonardis place at the NCAA DII National Championship in Wichita. Both were named All-Americans as Quiocho became the first Pioneer in program history to be a two-time All-American.
Quiocho, the 2023 National Champion in the 133-pound class, took 2nd after falling to Gabe Hixenbaugh of Montevallo in the title match. Quiocho rolled past his first three matches of the bracket, earning All-American status once again after going 2-0 on Friday.
DeLeonardis became the third All-American in program history following a 2-0 day on Friday, setting him up for a matchup with the #1 seed Nick Novak of St. Cloud State. DeLeonardis would fall to Novak but bounce back in the third-place match against Jack Haskin of Lake Erie College, winning 8-1. In total, he defeated three wrestlers who had beat him at some point earlier in the season.
Brady Ross (165) also competed, picking up a win in the preliminary round but falling in his next two matches. Nick Johnson (197) lost to the #1 seed in the opening round, won a match in the wrestlebacks before being knocked out in his second match of the wrestlebacks bracket. Lastly, Gavin Shamblin (285) was defeated in consecutive matches to fall out after making Nationals for the first time in his four-year career.
Head Coach Dylan Cottrell now turns his attention to building for the 2024-25 season, the program's fifth overall season.
