GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Former Glenville State Men's Basketball assistant Joe Mazzulla led the Boston Celtics to their 18
th NBA Championship on Monday night, becoming the youngest head coach (35-years-old) to lead a franchise to a title since Bill Russell did in 1968 at 34.
Mazzulla's first coaching opportunity was here at Glenville State, where he spent 2011-13 as an assistant under Stephen Dye. He made one more collegiate coaching stop before landing with the NBA G-League Maine Red Claws in 2016. From there, Mazzulla elevated himself to the NBA with the Boston Celtics as an assistant coach in 2019.
He was named the interim head coach of the Celtics right before the 2022-23 season, eventually having the interim tag taken off at the All-Star break after leading Boston to a 42-17 record to that point. Their season would come to an end in the Eastern Conference Finals following a seven-game series loss to the Miami Heat. The 2023-24 season marked his first full season as head coach, putting together a 64-18 record during the regular season and clinching the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Mazzulla-led Celtics steamrolled their way to the NBA Finals, setting up a matchup with the Dallas Mavericks. Boston completed their quest on Monday night, breaking their tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most NBA Championships.
In Mazzulla's two seasons as an NBA Head Coach, he's won 121 regular season games and 27 playoff games, including a 16-3 record during this year's playoffs.
