Glenville State Caps Off 2023-24 with Fifth-Place Finish in MEC Commissioner’s Cup Standings

7/1/2024 3:30:00 PM

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Glenville State capped off the 2023-24 school year with the highest finish in school history in the MEC Commissioner's Cup as the Pioneers placed 5th, the league announced today. GSU's previous best finish was last year when they placed 8th.

The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).

The University of Charleston captured their seventh-straight and ninth total MEC Commissioner's Cup with an impressive 1.01966 All-Sports Rating. Frostburg State (.71196), Fairmont State (.68954) and West Liberty (.57184) finished in front of the Pioneers. Glenville State's .51205 was good enough for 5th while Davis & Elkins (.47581), Concord (.46584), Wheeling (.45556), Notre Dame College (.43750), West Virginia Wesleyan (.41842) and West Virginia State (.41358) rounded out the standings.

Glenville State captured two Mountain East Conference championships this year, taking home the title in women's golf and wrestling. The Pioneers also finished in the middle or in the upper half of the MEC standings in football, baseball, acrobatics & tumbling and softball. MEC Tournament births were secured by men's & women's basketball, baseball, acrobatics & tumbling, women's soccer and softball.

"I am extremely proud of the hard work put forth by our coaches, student-athletes and supporters to achieve this major jump in the Cup Standings" said Director of Athletics Jesse Skiles.
