Turnovers Plague Pioneers in Loss at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – The Glenville State Football team lost to Emory & Henry, 38-7, today on the road to begin the 2024 season. The Pioneers produced 248 yards of total offense but had five turnovers, including four interceptions, while only forcing one turnover. The game was called early due to weather as at the beginning of the first delay, the head coaches of Emory & Henry and Glenville State agreed that after three delays they would revisit the situation. Following the third delay and the earliest time to resume play at 5:15 p.m., the decision was made to end the game.

1st Quarter
The Pioneers opened the game with the ball and had their drive extended on a pair of mental miscues by the Wasps. However, Glenville State couldn't take advantage of the 15-yard penalties and eventually had to punt it away. On Emory & Henry's first drive, it took them just seven plays to go 80 yards and score on an eight-yard run by Jordan Jackson. E&H used a fumble by GSU on the kickoff to extend their lead to 10-0 with a 37-yard field goal. Another turnover by the Pioneers allowed the Wasps to take over with good field position, eventually leading to another first quarter TD for E&H.

2nd Quarter
Following a stop by the GSU defense, the blue & white drove all the way down inside the 10 but came up emptied handed after a holding penalty moved them back and a missed field goal ended the drive. The turnover bug rolled over to the Pioneers next drive, as Garrett's pass was intercepted in the endzone. Mark Shepherd Jr. put the ball back in the offense's hands with an interception of his own across the middle of the field. The Wasps forced their fourth turnover of the first half on Glenville's next possession with an interception down the sideline. Glenville State salvaged the remainder of the half, trailing 17-0.

3rd Quarter
A quick stop by the GSU defense was quickly shadowed by a pick-six from Emory & Henry as the Wasps extended their advantage to 24-0, just two minutes into the new half. On the Wasps' following drive, they were once again able to find the endzone on a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Pioneers were finally able to end their scoring drought with 2:56 remaining in the quarter when Anthony Garrett found Elijah Palmer from 10 yards out. Brody Layman provided a spark with an onside kick that he also recovered. The Pioneers couldn't convert, turning the ball over on downs after getting past midfield. Shortly after, the Wasps made a big splash with a 54-yard touchdown pass.

4th Quarter
A weather delay shortly after the final quarter began paused the game for over an hour before the decision was made to call the game due to the inclement weather.
