Preview: Volleyball Looks to Carry Momentum to Michigan in the Grand Rapids Downtown Classic

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Volleyball is scheduled to play in the Hampton Inn & Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan this weekend. The Pioneers will play four games in three days; first against Davenport on Thursday (Sept. 12), Bemidji State on Friday (Sept. 13) at 10 a.m. and Northwood at 4 p.m. The road trip will end with a matchup against Tiffin on Saturday (Sept. 14).

THE OPPONENTS
DAVENPORT

2024 Season
The Panthers enter (1-3), including losses in their final two games of the Ray Thrasher Classic at Trevecca Nazarene.

Quick Look at The Panthers
Head Coach Charley Andrews is in her first season as head coach after being an assistant on staff in 2023. Rachel Youngblood leads the team in kills, tallying 49 in four games. Mehl Hanson has been the leading passer thus far, recording 82 assists. Defensively, Kaitlyn Marsh has 19 blocks and Hayley Carr is up to 61 Digs.

BEMIDJI STATE
2024 Season
The Beavers have a (2-2) record in 2024 with wins over Saint Martin's and Hawaii Pacific.

Head Coach Kevin Ulmer is in his 8th season as head coach of the Beavers, leading them to a 10-16 record in 2023. Ashley Crowl leads the team in kills with 63 in just four matches played, while Emily Wade leads the team in assists with 140. Defensively, Jada Wlodarczyk has racked up 50 digs and Zavda Priebe has 15 blocks.

NORTHWOOD
2024 Season
The Timberwolves are (3-0) with wins over Ohio Dominican, Wayne State and Frostburg State to open the young season.

Head Coach David Shumaker is in his 9th year with the program, posting an 18-13 record in 2023. Offensively, the Timberwolves are led by Sydney Hasenfratz with 51 kills in three matches and Renee Brines with 132 assists. Defensively, Kiana Martens leads the team with 35 digs and Hasenfratz with four blocks.

TIFFIN
2024 Season
Tiffin comes into the tournament with a (3-1) record, with wins over Maryville, Indiana (Pa.) and Daemen (N.Y.).

Quick Look at The Dragons
Alexa Wharton is in her second season leading the Dragons. Kenedi Goon leads the Dragon offense with 54 kills and Addison Conti has tallied 89 assists. Defensively, Diana Heitkamp has 78 digs and Kaylee Freund has 28 blocks so far this season.

THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE

2024 Season
The Pioneers are (1-4) on the young season, coming off a five-set victory over WVU Tech last night.

Quick Look at The Pioneers
Rita Kelly and Malerie Ross have paced the Pioneer offense so far, as Kelly has 50 kills and Ross has 45. Sadie Hill has been the lead setter as she has 105 total assists. Defensively, Isabella Bailey, Ross, and Morgan Stephenson are leading the team in digs. Bailey has 41, Ross 40 and Stephenson with 36. At the net, Greta Patofi leads the Pioneers with nine blocks and Deniz Selen Yazar has seven.
