FROSTBURG, Md. - The Glenville State Football team used a walk-off touchdown run from
Jeremiah King in double overtime to complete the upset of 21st ranked and previously undefeated Frostburg State, 19-13, in Maryland earlier today. The Pioneers improved to (3-3, 2-1 MEC) on the season after totaling 393 yards of offense and overcoming 13 penalties this afternoon.
Â
1st Quarter
It was a lackluster first quarter for both squads, as Glenville State looked to have a promising drive after
Anthony Garrett connected with
Tariq Miller down the sideline for 39 yards, however, an interception inside the five halted the drive. Frostburg State saw much of the same fate, rolling down the field before having their drive ended on a turnover on downs with Myles Fulton slipping while handing the ball off on 4th and 1. From there, four-straight three and outs would occur with just two complete passes between the two teams as the stanza ended.
Â
2nd Quarter
The Pioneer offense got in a groove in their second drive of the second quarter when Garrett led GSU down the field and found
Naseem Pacheco from 26 yards out on a 3rd and 14 to give Glenville State a 7-0 lead. Frostburg State took off more than six minutes off the clock in their next drive, as it originally seemed GSU would enjoy a 7-3 lead going into the break but a roughing the kicker gave FSU new life. They took full advantage, scoring a touchdown on the next play from the eight-yard line to knot things up at seven all going into the locker room.
Â
3rd Quarter
Out of the break, the Bobcats once again had a long and methodical drive, chopping off seven minutes of game time and settling for a field goal after a big stop by
Shary Jefferson on third down. Down 10-7, the Pioneers used multiple 20+ yard passing connections to set up a
Brody Layman 21-yard field goal to tie it up.
Â
4th Quarter
Penalties started to really play a factor in the fourth quarter, with Frostburg having a big 25-yard play brought back on an ineligible man downfield. The Bobcats were able to get inside the Pioneer 10-yardline but
Eugene Allen stuffed the 4th and 2 run to force a turnover on downs. Back-to-back punts transpired before Frostburg State took over in plus territory on an interception. Another strong stand by the GSU defense forced a field goal attempt by the Bobcats, and
Kalon Curry got a hand on the kick to keep the game tied at 10.
Â
The punters got more work in on the following drives as neither team could get their offense going. That changed in the closing minutes of regulation when Frostburg State used a 23-yard connection between Myles Fulton and Jevonn Gilyard to move into field goal range.
Mike Kellar was forced to call his timeouts with FSU creeping inside the 10-yardline. After falling short of the line to gain, the Frostburg State special teams trotted out on the field for a 24-yard field goal. Harrison Fritz pulled it left and Glenville State took over from the 20. A holding and roughing the passer gave GSU free yards but an interception in the endzone ended their quest to winning the game in regulation.
Â
Overtime
The Pioneers opened up the overtime with a field goal after driving to the six-yardline but failing to find the endzone. Frostburg State also flirted with a touchdown, but they stayed conservative and settled for a second overtime with a field goal. The Bobcats had the ball to begin the second overtime and started it with an 18-yard gain to the GSU seven. Glenville State's defense had their strongest stand of the day, denying the Bobcats entry to the endzone on third and fourth down from the two-yardline.
Â
A defensive holding opened up the second overtime before
Jeremiah King completely took over, rushing for eight yards on a 2nd and 12, converting a 3rd and 4 with a five-yard run and scoring the game-winning touchdown from a yard out to give the Pioneers the 19-13, double OT upset on the road.
