THE OPPONENT
UNIVERSITY OF CHARLESTON (3–2, 0–0 MEC)
2024–25 Season
Charleston finished (19–10) last season and reached the MEC Tournament Quarterfinals, where their season ended at the hands of Glenville State in a 77-65 loss. With many key players returning, UC may have this matchup circled as an early-season chance to respond.
2025–26 Season So Far
The Golden Eagles opened with two dominant wins at the Ron Wilson Classic, later falling on the road to California (Pa.) and narrowly dropping a heartbreaker to No. 3 Daemen, 81-79. UC responded with an 87-69 win over Elizabeth City State on Nov. 25. Entering MEC play, UC averages 84.4 points per game, shoots 53.5% from the field, and is hitting 40% from three—one of the most efficient offensive profiles in the league.
Quick Look at The Golden Eagles
- Matthew Shelton (13.6 PPG, 54% FG) – Physical, efficient forward with shot-blocking presence
- Thomas Hailey (12.8 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 72% FG) – Dominant interior finisher
- Kaden Davis (8.6 PPG) – High-energy guard who pressures the rim
- Ben Nicol (8.2 PPG, 50% 3PT) – Premier floor-spacer

UC out-rebounds opponents by +4.2 per game and holds teams to 76.2 PPG.
WEST VIRGINIA STATE (3–3, 0–1 MEC)
2024–25 Season
West Virginia State finished (20-9) a season ago and made another trip to the MEC Tournament, but this year's roster looks very different. The Yellow Jackets lost most of their top production from last season and have retooled with new faces, transfers, and freshmen stepping into major roles.
2025–26 Season So Far
Despite the roster overhaul, State has shown flashes of high-level play. The Jackets opened 2-0 at home before dropping neutral and road contests at Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate and No. 10 Fairmont State. They bounced back with a 65-60 home win over Bluefield State to move to (3-3) entering this week. WVSU remains one of the fastest-paced teams in the MEC, averaging 82.5 PPG, but defensive consistency continues to be a work in progress (allowing 87.5 PPG).
Quick Look at The Yellow Jackets
State's new-look roster is led by a mix of transfers and emerging scorers:
- Ishmael Smith (16.8 PPG, 56% FG) – One of the league's most efficient new scorers; relentless attacker
- Trey Harris (10.5 PPG, 43% 3PT) – Smooth shooter capable of heating up quickly
- Hassan Belkhaddar (10.2 PPG, 7.3 RPG) – Versatile forward with length and rebounding touch
- Tyree Davis (9.6 PPG) – Instant offense off the bench
- Aymeric Toussaint (9.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG) – Athletic presence in the paint
- Jaylen Subject (8.3 PPG) – Crafty guard who thrives in transition
Even with a rebuilt roster, the Jackets still push pace, shoot the three well (36%), and force turnovers (11 steals per game), making them dangerous when momentum swings their way.
