Explosive First Half Pushes Lady Pioneers Past West Virginia State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – A 34-point first quarter pushed the Glenville State Lady Pioneer Women's Basketball team to their first conference win of 2025-26 over West Virginia State, 94-83. GSU snapped their two-game skid and improved to (4-2, 1-1 MEC).

1st Half
Khalia Bryant got the scoring started for Glenville State, and three pointers from Jayda Allie, Wonder Nkoyock, Ashlyn Riley and Stevi Yancy paced the Lady Pioneers to a 34-23 lead after one quarter. JayCee Elzy connected on a layup to open the second period, and scores from Payton James, Carine Pinkney, and Keanti Thompson pushed the GSU lead to 18 at the half, 58-40.

2nd Half
To open the third quarter, Payton James splashed a three-pointer to put the Lady Pioneers up 20, and another three from Niko Kaufmann gave GSU their largest lead at 23. Free throws from WVSU with a minute remaining in the quarter would make the score 79-60 at the end of three periods. As the Lady Pioneers were trying to salt the game away with a big lead, Nwando Okigbo made two free throws to open the final quarter, however, WVSU cut the lead to just 12 with under five minutes to play.
