No. 7 Falcons Pull Away Late to Down Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team took the nation's No. 7 team, Fairmont State, down to closing minutes tonight until the Falcons pulled away, 87-70 The Pioneers record now stands at (10-10, 5-8 MEC).

In the first half,  the Pioneers would start the game off on a 7-3 run. The Falcons quickly tied things up four minutes into the half as both teams traded blows, struggling to get ahead. With just two minutes left in the half, the Falcons would lead the Pioneers by six points but GSU showed resilience, tying the game up at 44-44 heading into the locker room The first half was a battle as there was a total of seven lead changes and six ties.

In the second half, things started how they left off as both teams would go back and forth until the Falcons would take a six-point lead just three minutes into the half. The Pioneers answered back with a 7-0 run giving them a one-point lead. Halfway through the second half, the Falcons went on a 14-2 run, putting the Pioneers at a thirteen-point deficient. The Pioneers spent the rest of the half trying to dig themselves out of a hole but would fail as the Falcons bested the Pioneers, 87-70.

The Falcons were led in scoring tonight by both David Jolinder and Sam Emich, who had 18 points apiece. Jolinder led the team on the boards with seven rebounds and added two steals as well. Three different Falcons led the team in assists with three each. On defense, the Falcons were led by Rudy Fitzgibbons III with three steals and Andre Harris' one block.

The Pioneers were led by Sameir Kinsler, who had 19 points and one steal. Freshman Ammar Maxwell did what he does best tonight as he had 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Devin Collins added 15 points, five rebounds, and one block as the graduate student reached 1,000 career points. Prince Mosengo grabbed seven boards to lead the Pioneers.

Glenville State welcomes Point Park on Wednesday (Feb. 5) at the Waco Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
