GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State athlete
Nwando Okigbo has been named Female Pioneer of the Week while
Hayden Pummel &
Nick Johnson share Male Pioneer of the Week honors presented by
GoMart, the GSU Athletic Department announced.
Okigbo, a true freshman out of Anambra, Nigeria, averaged 10.0 PPG, 12.5 RPG, 2.0 SPG and 1.5 APG last week as the Lady Pioneers split with Charleston and Concord. Okigbo flirted with a double-double in both games, posting 11 points and nine boards in a win against the Golden Eagles and having nine points and 14 rebounds in a loss at Concord. The 6-foot guard was also recently named Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year.
Pummel, a junior transfer from Northern Illinois, captured the NCAA DII Super Region 3 Championship in the 174-pound class this weekend. The Russells Point, Ohio native won his first two matches by tech fall before winning by decision to earn his spot into the finals. A pin fall 3:19 into the match awarded Pummel his Super Region 3 Championship.
Johnson, a Parkersburg, W.Va. native, won a NCAA DII Super Region 3 Championship at 197 pounds this weekend. He earned a bye in the opening round before rolling to consecutive victories to qualify for the championship match. The junior pinned Ashland's Kaine Morris 1:36 into their match to win his Super Region 3 Championship.
