BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Coming off of their best season since the formation of the Mountain East Conference, the Glenville State Football team has been selected 3rd in the MEC Preseason Coaches Poll, the league announced today.

Back-to-back MEC champion Charleston was once again picked to win the league with 63 points and seven first-place votes while GSU rival Fairmont State took 2nd with 52 points and one first-place vote. The Pioneers came in at No. 3 with 49 points and one first-place vote, followed by Frostburg State (44 points), West Virginia State (38 points), Wheeling (31 points), West Liberty (21 points), Concord (17 points) and West Virginia Wesleyan (nine points).

The Pioneers, who were picked to finish 5th in 2024, had a second-place finish in the league with a (7-2) mark in league play. GSU sat (2-4) overall and (2-2) in the MEC before a five-game winning streak propelled them up the standings and to a seven win campaign.

Seventh-year Head Coach Mike Kellar thinks his team has what it takes to win it all in 2025 but the Pioneers "have to play up to their standard" and "it's going to take consistency." Glenville State opens the 2025 season with Emory & Henry, who finished (9-2) last year, on August 30 at Herbert Hoover Stadium. The Pioneers, after back-to-back away games against PSAC opponents, start conference play on September 27 with preseason favorite Charleston.

The Golden Eagles will be the first MEC program to play in 2025, kicking off the season with Livingstone on Thursday, August 28.
