GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Football is opening their 2025 Home Away Home Games on Saturday (Aug. 30), hosting Emory & Henry. The contest will be held at Herbert Hoover High School's Huskie Stadium.
This game marks a decades-long partnership between the two schools. As a celebration of this, Glenville has announced three Honorary Captains for the event- individuals who are legends at both Hoover and Glenville; Jim Hamrick, Steve Gandee and Mike Rust.
JIM HAMRICK
In many ways, Jim Hamrick is one of the Founding Father's of Herbert Hoover High School. He was the school's first football coach and remained in that position for over decade. He also coached track for the Huskies during this time. After Hoover, Hamrick remained in the Elk Valley as an administrator- as the Principal at Clendenin Junior High for 18 years.Â

At Glenville, Hamrick played both basketball and baseball. He was on the great 1955 Pioneer basketball team that included six future GSU Hall of Famers.Â

Hamrick would ascend to top role in West Virginia High School sports, becoming the Executive Secretary of the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletic Commission (WVSSAC). He also was a long tenured official in a variety of sports; baseball, basketball, football and track & field. Hamrick was the Director of the West Virginia State Track & Field Meet for 20+ years. He was also the Director of two NAIA National Championship meets that were held in Charleston.Â

Hamrick also served on the Glenville State Board of Governors, and in both the Herbert Hoover and Glenville State Halls of Fame.Â

STEVE GANDEE
*Steve "Reno" Gandee is a member of both the Herbert Hoover and Glenville State Halls of Fame. He is a 1978 graduate of Hoover, and a 1982 graduate of Glenville. The Clendenin native was a star for the Huskies on the iconic undefeated 1977 team. He went on to a stellar career for the Pioneers in both Football and Baseball where he was a First-Team All-Conference performer.Â

After his playing days, he served as an assistant coach on the staff of Frank Vincent. Gandee went on to earn his MBA from WVU in 1985, and served his alma mater as a visiting professor in the late 80's. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 1989, and has materialized a long and decorated career as a lawyer. He currently works for Robinson & McElwee, PLLC in Charleston.Â

Besides his career as a lawyer, Gandee is one of the longest serving basketball officials in the state. He has served 40+ years as a high school official, and almost 30 as a collegiate official in both the WVIAC and MEC.Â

Gandee served on Glenville's Board of Governors, and remains on the school's Hall of Fame Committee, where he is one of the Athletic Department's primary historians.

MIKE RUST
Mike Rust is not only one of the most successful businessmen to come out of Herbert Hoover, but the Kanawha Valley as a whole. Rust is a 1969 graduate of Herbert Hoover and a 1973 graduate of Glenville State.Â
Â
After Glenville, Rust went on to a successful business and administrative career that culminated in him overseeing the entire Health System in the State of Kentucky. For 24 years he was the President and CEO of the Kentucky Hospital Association until his retirement in 2019.

Rust is a member of Glenville's Luke Demarino Memorial Business Hall of Fame. He served as Chair for Glenville's Board of Governors and also spent an extended tenure on the Board for the University of Louisville. He has been a major donor to the University in several areas.
