Preview: Pioneer Volleyball Begins 2025 Season with Opening Weekend Tournament at Home

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - Glenville State Volleyball is hosting the GSU Tournament this week at the Waco Center in Glenville on Friday (Sept. 5) and Saturday (Sept. 6) as GSU will have four non-conference matches over the weekend to kick off the 2025 campaign. The Pioneers are looking to improve upon their (3-25) record they posted a year ago. Head coach Kiara Perkins brought in multiple transfers along with a freshman class to compliment the returning production from last season.

THE OPPONENTS
BLUEFIELD STATE
Head coach Keyonna Morrow is entering her first year leading the Big Blue and is hoping to build upon a (16-18) record from last year as well as an appearance in the conference semifinals. Kaliegh Solis is the leading returning setter for the team, as she recorded 53 assists a season ago, along with Rosalyn Nightingale as the Libero returning after playing in 115 sets in 2024. 

CHOWAN
Kellan Hollingsworth is entering his second season as Head Volleyball Coach and posted a (4-21) overall record a year ago, while going (2-16) during the Conference Carolinas slate. Key returners include Diana Rodriguez with 49 assists last season, Jada Caruthers with 92 kills on the front line and Alyssa Thompson with 56 kills in 2024. 

CARSON-NEWMAN
Head Coach Cat Collins is entering her second season at the helm of the Eagle Volleyball program and is coming off a winning first year where her team posted a (16-11) overall record and a (12-6) finish in the Southern Athletic Conference. Maddie Hurst won Freshman of the Year a season ago and is a key returner for the Eagles as she recorded 292 kills in 2024. Other key returners include Emerson Ahsmuhs, who had 293 kills last season and Blair Cherry, who notched 1,013 assists a year ago. 

WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
Head Coach Nancy Wheeler is entering her fifth year at the helm for the Bobcats Women's Volleyball program and her team produced a (15-15) record a season ago and a (5-10) record in Mountain East Conference play along with qualifying for the MEC Tournament. Key returner Emily Dennison recorded 268 kills last season and Bhrooke Axe had 319 while Lisdarelyn Grassals posted 95 kills in 2024. 

THE PIONEERS
GLENVILLE STATE
Head Coach Kiara Perkins is entering her third year leading the blue and white after a 2024 season that saw Keleigh Chrisman land on the MEC All-Freshman team. The Pioneers return seniors Greta Petofi, Sadie Hill, Rita Kelly, Malerie Ross and Morgan Stephenson, all who are experienced and have contributed in recent years. In 2024, Petofi had 51 kills, Hill recorded 573 assists, Kelly 241 had kills, Ross notched 131 kills and Stephenson racked up 225 digs from her Libero spot.
