Lady Pioneers Bounce Back with Emphatic Win at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team used a 29-point third quarter to put away the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, 89-68, on the road Wednesday (Jan. 21) evening. The Lady Pioneers now stand at (13-3) overall and (8-2) in league play, which puts them in a three-way tie for first place in the MEC.

1st Half
Nwando Okigbo started the scoring with a good jump shot and GSU would build their lead with a layup from Ashlyn Riley and quality defense, ending the first quarter with a five-point lead. In the second, Carine Pinkney connected on an and-one layup to build the lead to seven, and a three-point shot from Wonder Nkoyock extended the advantage to double digits as Glenville State held the upperhand at halftime, 38-31.

2nd Half
The third quarter would be the determining factor in the game as the Lady Pioneers extended their lead to 24 as they started the stanza off with a sixteen-to-zero run behind scores from Stevi Yancy, Payton James, Okigbo, Pinkney, and Riley. In the fourth, the GSU advantage swelled to as many as 30 as JayCee Elza knocked down a three-pointer, and a good jumper from Niko Kaufmann finished the game at 89-68 in favor of the Lady Pioneers.

West Virginia State
Ahjanae Young had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the team in both categories while Baylee Goins was the other double-figure scorer with 19. Latisha Parris, Jennessee Byrd and Makayla Smith all had six points in the defeat.

Glenville State
Carine Pinkney had a season-high 26 points on the night, grabbing six rebounds and shooting 11-18 from the floor. Ashlyn Riley poured in 20 points on 7-13 shooting, Nwando Okigbo led the team in rebounding with nine while also scoring 12 points and Wonder Nkoyock also scored in double-figures with 11.

Glenville State will continue their road swing with a matchup against Concord on Saturday (Jan. 24) as tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
