Yancy Scores 21 as Lady Pioneers Fend Off Mountain Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team took care of business in Athens tonight (Jan. 23) to regain sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference, beating Concord, 91-86. GSU now stands at (14-3, 9-2 MEC) on the year

1st Half
Stevi Yancy started off the game with a layup to give the Lady Pioneers the early advantage and she'd connect on a three-pointer at the end of the first to put Glenville State up by five after ten minutes of play. In the second, Khalia Bryant scored the first two for the road team, while Keanti Thomspon and Jayda Allie knocked down threes, however, CU would score at the horn to cut the lead to just three going into the half.

2nd Half
In the third quarter, GSU built on their lead with scores from Nwando Okigbo, Carine Pinkney, and Wonder Nkoyock. A steal and a three from Payton James at the end of the stanza would put the Lady Pioneers up seven going into the final ten minutes. In the final quarter, GSU extended their advantage to as many as 19, but Concord did not quit and would eventually cut the deficit to four points with under a minute remaining. Free throws from Bryant, Okigbo and Yancy put the game away late with the final score landing at 91-86.

Concord
Kennedy Scales scored 22 points to lead the Mountain Lions. Abbie Smith recorded 18 and grabbed 12 rebounds as former Lady Pioneer Kenyah Stubbs had 15 points and 11 assists. Alexis Frazee had eight points in the defeat as well.

Glenville State
Stevi Yancy had a season-high 21 points on the night on 7-12 shooting and 3-5 from beyond the arc while also pulling down six rebounds and notching five steals. Khalia Bryant scored 16 points and also had six rebounds while Keanti Thompson had 11 points and four steals. Salem transfer Carine Pinkney had ten points and three assists as Nwando Okigbo and Jayda Allie both chipped in with eight points each and Wonder Nkoyock recorded six.

Up Next For The Pioneers
GSU will host Frostburg State on Wednesday (Jan. 28) at 5:30 p.m. inside the Waco Center.
