GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Glenville State Women's Soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to nationally-ranked Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4) at Ike & Sue Morris Stadium. The No. 20 Falcons remain unbeaten on the season, while the Pioneers fall to (5-6) overall and (5-4) in Mountain East Conference play.
1st Half
Fairmont State applied pressure early and nearly opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Arrington Sparks struck the left post. The Falcons continued to generate opportunities throughout the opening half, but Lucia Lopez repeatedly came up with key saves to keep the match scoreless. Glenville State created a pair of early chances from Solares Solano and Isabella Cuellar-Gutierrez, but neither attempt found the target.
Fairmont eventually broke through in the 23rd minute when Serenity Thomas found Sam Yuen, who finished the opportunity to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage. The visitors continued to press following the goal, recording several shots on target over the remainder of the half. Lopez made nine first-half saves, helping keep the deficit at one heading into halftime.
2nd Half
The Falcons maintained control of possession after the break and continued to challenge the Glenville State defense. Lopez added four more saves in the second half. Despite limited opportunities, the Pioneers remained within striking distance throughout the afternoon. Glenville earned its lone corner kick of the match in the 70th minute and nearly found an equalizer later in the half when Solano put a shot on target, but Fairmont goalkeeper Olivia Johnston made the save.
The Pioneers continued to battle through the closing minutes, but the Falcons held on to preserve the shutout and remain unbeaten on the season.
