Offense Goes Ice Cold as Lady Pioneers Narrowly Fall in MEC Championship to Charleston

WHEELING, W.Va. – The first-seeded Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team scored their lowest point total of the season and gave up just 48 points in today's (Mar. 8) Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship game loss to Charleston, 48-43, inside WesBanco Arena. The Lady Pioneers fell to (24-6) on the season with the defeat.

1st Half
GSU opened the game on a 5-0 run with Carine Pinkney nailing two free throws and Wonder Nkoyock finding the bottom of the barrel from three. From there, Nkoyock would score another five points in a row for the Lady Pioneers, extending the lead to six at 10-4. The Golden Eagles found a groove offensively just minutes later, going on a 13-4 run to end the quarter and leading Glenville State, 17-13, at the end of the first stanza.

The slow offensive start for GSU continued into the next quarter, as the blue and white didn't score for nearly seven minutes and UC built a lead as big as 11. Nwando Okigbo and Carine Pinkney were able to put a hitch into Charleston's advantage, trimming it down to seven as the halftime horn hit.

2nd Half
Following the Golden Eagles gaining comfortability in the 10-point lead they had in the third quarter, Glenville State went on an 11-3 run late in the third stanza to trail by just two as the two team's prepped for the final 10 deciding minutes. The fourth quarter was tight throughout, even with GSU going 0-for-13 from the field and scoring an MEC Tournament record-low seven points in the 4th. The blue and white had a look from three to tie it with 26 seconds left, but the three-pointer went long and UC closed the championship out on free throws, 48-43.
