INDIANA, Pa. – The sixth-seeded Glenville State Lady Pioneer Basketball team had their season come to an end Friday (Mar. 13) afternoon, falling to third-seeded Winston-Salem State, 88-71, in the opening round of the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Tournament. GSU finished the campaign (24-7) in 2025-26.
1st Half
Winston-Salem State came out firing, pushing out to 10-0 lead before
Wonder Nkoyock finally stopped the bleeding with an and-one layup with just over seven minutes left in the first quarter. WSSU's smothering defense forced the Lady Pioneers to six turnovers in the first four and a half minutes, however, Nkoyock and
Keanti Thompson sliced the defense to trim Glenville State's deficit to just four, 13-9. The Rams stayed consistent from behind the arc, nailing five three-pointers to grab a 21-14 advantage after one quarter of play.
Just like the opening quarter, WSSU started the second stanza with a three, but
Jayda Allie quickly responded with a three ball of her own. After the Rams got the lead back to seven,
Nylah Davis muscled her way to the rim and
Stevi Yancy's steal set up another Allie three-pointer to force a Winston Salem-State timeout and cut their lead to just two, 26-24. Glenville State had their lowest deficit at 37-36, but the Winston-Salem State three-point shooting and offensive rebounding spring boarded their lead back up to eight with two minutes left in the half. WSSU eventually took a 48-38 lead into the locker room, knocking down eight first half three pointers and grabbing 13 offensive rebounds.
2nd Half
Carine Pinkney got the scoring started for GSU in the second half with a driving layup as the pace of the game slowed down drastically with neither team really able to find the bottom of the basket in the opening four minutes. Nkoyock added a three to cut the WSSU lead to single digits, however, stale offensive possessions and timely shooting by the Rams put the Lady Pioneers behind by 13. Yancy's three made it a nine-point contest, but the story of the game continued to be the offensive rebounding by the Rams that led to wide-open threes. GSU had a pair of opportunities to go down by single digits as the quarter closed, but consecutive turnovers led to a runaway layup as WSSU took a 69-56 lead into the final quarter.
After Winston-Salem State started the fourth quarter with a layup, Yancy nailed a three-pointer as Glenville State kept the game in range. That changed when the Rams knocked down their 12
th and 13
th three-pointers to burst the lead out to 19, 82-63. It was cruise control for WSSU in the final minutes, closing out the Lady Pioneers, 88-71, and advancing to the second round.
