ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Glenville State Volleyball team traveled to play in the Viking Classic earlier today (Sept. 4), starting off tournament play against Belmont Abbey and Kutztown. The Pioneers fell in both games, losing 3-1 & 3-2. GSU now sits at (3-4) on the year.
Game One - GSU 1 | Belmont Abbey 3
The Pioneers narrowly dropped the opening set, 25-23, before responding with a strong 25-21 victory in the second to even the match. Belmont Abbey regained the lead with a 25-21 win in the third, but Glenville State continued to fight in the fourth. The Pioneers stayed within reach throughout the final set before Belmont Abbey closed out the match, 25-22.

Renata Bolado led the team in kills with 14 while Lola Sultenfuss had nine. Emma Youngblood led in assists with 29, and Sheridan Young had five. Sheridan Young led the Crusaders in digs with 19, while Youngblood had five.

Gracie Brown led the Pioneers with 11 kills, with
Kendel Harris and
Juliana Nunez adding eight each.
Irmak Bezek led Glenville State with 20 assists, while
Elitsa Peneva added nine. Defensively,
Kassie Swink had eight digs with
Cecelia Bryant adding six and
Deniz Selen Yazar had two blocks at the net.
Game Two - GSU 2 | Kutztown 3
Glenville State battled Kutztown in a thrilling five-set match this evening, ultimately falling 3-2 at the R.L. Vaughan Center. The Pioneers came out strong in the opening set, recording 14 kills, but Kutztown edged Glenville State, 25-23. Glenville responded in the second set, taking control and earning a 25-22 victory to even the match. The Pioneers continued their momentum in the third, fighting their way to a 25-23 win and taking a 2-1 lead. Kutztown answered in the fourth with a 25-22 victory, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Golden Bears were able to close out the match with a 15-9 win in the final frame.

Paige Skinner led the team in kills with 15 while Madilyn Bogovic had 12. Emma Baldridge led in assists with 22, and Bogovic had nine. Saige Thibodeaux led the Golden Bears in digs with 18 and Baldridge had eight in the win.
Glenville State
Juliana Nunez led the Pioneers with 17 kills, while
Mikayla Curry added 11 kills and six blocks
. Irmak Bezek finished with 35 assists and
Kassie Swink anchored the defense with 26 digs.
