GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Glenville State Women's Soccer defeated the University of Charleston, 2-0, for the first time in program history on Wednesday (Sept. 9) night inside a loud Ike & Sue Morris Stadium. The Pioneers were previously (0-16) against the Golden Eagles. This win marks their second MEC win of the season, improving their record to (2-2, 2-0 MEC).
1st Half
The half began with both teams taking a pair of shots early, with all four missed. Minutes later each team got another try, but both would be saved by the respective goalkeepers. Although it ended in a drought, it was an even half with both teams taking seven shots in total.
2nd Half
The Pioneers turned it up shortly into the second half, scoring the first goal of the match 10 minutes in. After two missed shots by Charleston early in the half, an assist by Mya Davila from the sideline connected with Solares Solano for GSU to take the lead. The Golden Eagles attempted to tie the game a few minutes later, but Lucia Lopez was there to make the stop. A quick trip down the field after the miss ended in a second goal for the Pioneers, with freshman Isabella Cuellar-Gutierrez making the play, assisted this time by Solano. Charleston struggled the rest of the half, taking seven more shots, but none could find the back of the net.
Final Stats
Charleston
Sydney Crowe led the Golden Eagles with five of the 17 shot attempts in the match. Charleston outshot GSU 17-11, with 10 of those attempts coming in the second half and only six total on goal. Goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti recorded four saves.
Glenville State
The Pioneers also had six shots on goal, but were able to convert on two of them, ending in a 2-0 win. Solares Solano contributed on both goals, scoring one and assisting on the other. Pioneer forward Isabella Cuellar-Gutierrez netted her first goal of the season off of the assist. Freshman Mya Davila and Adalie Besedich both had their first shots on goal of the season as well. Lucia Lopez saved every attempt by Charleston, adding six more to her season total.
