Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer men's basketball team gave a brilliant effort at home on Thursday night but came up short against the #1 team in the country the Fairmont State Falcons.
Glenville State (11-14, 8-13) got off to a good start as they held a one point lead over FSU 19-18 at the second media timeout of the first half. Fairmont State then made a short run as they took a five point lead 34-29 with under five minutes to play.
The Pioneers however ended the half on a 13-5 run as they trailed the Falcons by one point 42-41 at the break.
In the second half of action both teams would battle with neither team gaining much ground however FSU built a seven point lead 64-57 with 10:24 to play. GSC then fought back and cut it to three, 66-63 at the 6:58 minute mark.
Fairmont State then finished the game on a 20 to 13 run with Jason Jolly hitting 10 straight free-throws as the Falcons held on to claim a five point win over the Pioneers 86-81.
Glenville State won the rebounding battle 36 to 35 and they outscored FSU in the paint 52 to 40.
Fairmont State scored 20 points off of 17 turnovers by the Pioneers.
The Pioneers had a very balanced offensive attack with
Jalon Plummer leading the way with 16 points while
Brett Morris and
Jon Dunmyer each chipped in with 14 points.
Terry Davis Jr. scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Brooks Ely and
Darhius Nunn both scored nine points on the night while Nunn dished out a game-high eight assists.
Fairmont State (26-1, 20-1) was led by Matt Bingaya as he had a game-high 21 points while Thomas Wimbush posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Glenville State will host the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday, February 25
th in their final home game before the MEC Tournament. Saturday is also Winter Homecoming and Fan Appreciation Day as well as Senior Day. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
