Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Baseball team split a double-header with the Barton College Bulldogs on day two, Saturday afternoon, as GSC claimed their first win of the 2018 season.
In the first game of the day, Barton College would strike first in the bottom of the first as they scored four runs off of two hits while GSC committed two errors as the Bulldogs led 4-0.
GSC would manage a hit in the top of the second but was still scoreless in the game. Barton then added another run in the bottom of the second off of two hits as they now led the Pioneers, 5-0.
The Pioneers finally got on the scoreboard in the third inning as
Bryan Bayliss grounded out to the pitcher but not before
Christian Hedinger crossed the plate as they made it, 5-1.
Barton added another run in the third inning as they now led, 6-1.
Glenville State would manage to cut into the deficit in the fourth as they scored two runs off of three hits as the Pioneers made it a three run game at, 6-3. However Barton's bats would come alive in the bottom of the fourth as they scored seven runs on six hits as they went back up 13-3.
The Pioneers then went scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings as they fell to the Bulldogs in game one, 13-3.
Glenville State finished the game with eight hits and three errors while Barton committed one error and had 13 hits.
Christian Hedinger went 2-for-2 with two RBI's and scored a run while
Anthony Jarvis,
Tyler Phillips,
John Peloro,
Jordan Braniff, Shane Talvacchioo, and
Carter Boswell all recorded a hit in the game.
Adam Riggleman picked up his first loss of the year as he pitched 2.2 innings allowing five hits, six runs, and struck out four batters.
Glenville State would strike first in game two in the second inning as they scored two runs off of two hits as they led, 2-0. But Barton would answer back in the bottom of the second as they took a 3-2 lead scoring three runs off of three hits.
The Pioneers then tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the fourth as
Jordan Braniff grounded out to the shortstop (RBI) scoring
Anthony Jarvis.
Glenville State then broke the game wide open in the fifth as they scored four runs off of five hits to take a 7-3 lead. The Pioneer then held the Bulldogs scoreless in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings as GSC claimed their first win of the year, 7-3.
The Pioneers registered 11 hits while allowing Barton just five hits.
Logan Henderson went 1-for-3 with three RBI's while
Jordan Braniff,
Tyler Phillips, and
Christian Hedinger each had an RBI in the win.
Andrew Hughart went the distance pitching all seven innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three batters.
Glenville State (1-3) will return to the diamond on Saturday, February 24
th when they travel to Winston-Salem State for a three game series.
