Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer Baseball team split a double-header on Saturday with the Blue Knights of Urbana University.
Game one, GSC would take an early 2-0 in the bottom of the first. However Urbana pulled within one run in the second off of a Pioneer error, 2-1.
The Blue Knights broke the game open in the fourth as they scored five runs to take a 6-2 lead over the Pioneers. Urbana then added three more runs in the sixth inning off of five hits as they took a commanding 9-2 lead.
Urbana went on to defeat Glenville State 9-2.
The Pioneers registered five hits and committed two errors while Notre Dame recorded nine hits with one error.
Brady Wilkinson pitched 3.2 innings allowing six runs; five earned on three hits while striking out four batters.
John Peloro went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Tyler Phillips had the other RBI for the Pioneers while
Zach Bacon went 1-for-1 and
Bryan Bayliss went 1-for-3.
Game two of the afternoon would see the Pioneers down the Blue Knights with a walk-off home run from freshman Trevon Smith as he lifted GSC past Urbana 6-5.
GSC fell behind early as Urbana scored two in the first as they led 2-0.
Glenville State cut it to one run in the bottom of the second as
Anthony Jarvis hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, as they trailed 2-1.
Jordan Braniff tied it up at 2-2 for the Pioneers in the third as he hit his second home run of the season.
Urbana would break the tie in the top of the fourth as Daniel Quiroz hit a bomb to left center as the Blue Knights led 3-2. Again the Pioneers answered back in the bottom of the fourth tying it up at 3-3 as
Christian Hedinger hit his third home run of the season.
The Blue Knights again broke the tie in the top of the fifth off of a two run home as they went up 5-3.
Glenville State would add a run in the bottom of the fifth as
Tre'von Smith hit an RBI double scoring
Logan Henderson as the Pioneers trailed 5-4.
The Pioneers then tied it up at 5-5 in the sixth as
Zach Bacon crossed the plate due to a balk from the Blue Knights. Glenville State then held Urbana scoreless in the seventh and would make them pay in the bottom of the seventh.
The lead-off batter for the Pioneer's in the seventh would be
Tre'von Smith as he would end the contest with a walk-off home run to left field as GSC defeated UU 6-5.
Wesley Stauffer picked up his first win of the year as he pitched 2.0 innings as he allowed no hits, no runs, and struck out two batters.
Trevon Smith was the hero as he finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Jordan Braniff went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Anthony Jarvis and
Christian Hedinger both had an RBI.
Glenville State (9-16, 6-6) will return to action on Saturday, April 7 when they travel to UVa-Wise for a double-header with the Cavaliers.
