Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Cavaliers of UVa-Wise

Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Lady Pioneer volleyball team dropped a hard fought match in their home MEC opener on Friday evening to the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise, 3-2.

Glenville State (4-5, 0-1) had 61 total kills in the game while UVa-Wise (3-9, 1-0) finished with 55 total kills.

The Cavaliers took set one from GSC, 28-26. The first set saw the Lady Pioneers tally 18 kills but committed seven errors while UVa-Wise finished with 14 kills and had just three errors.

The Lady Pioneers dominated the second set as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead. GSC then built a 20-5 lead before going on to win it, 25-16.

GSC would find their selves trailing the Cavaliers 18-10 in the third set. The Lady Pioneers tried to make up the difference but ended up falling, 25-18.

In the fourth set, both teams would battle back and forth as we were knotted up at 17 all. GSC then scored the next five points, winning the set, 25-23.

In the fifth and final set the Cavaliers jumped out to an 8-2 lead. GSC tried to bounce back however UVa-Wise would prove to be to much as the Lady Pioneers fell, 15-8.

Glenville State finished with eight block assists and four solo blocks while UVa-Wise had 14 block assists and four solo blocks.

Skylar Mace, Bailey Brawner, and Jazaray Clark-Casto each had 16 kills while Chase Cooksey had 11 kills.

Ai Miyazaki had 29 digs while Madison Gargus had a game high 54 assists.

UVa-Wise was led by Madelyn Lawrence as she had a game-high 21 kills. Makayla Ledford had 49 assists while Morgan Milligan finished with 23 digs.

Glenville State (4-5, 0-1) will host the Concord University Mountain Lions tomorrow Saturday, September 15th from the Waco Center at 1 p.m.
