Glenville, W.Va. – The Gannon University Golden Knights used four solo homeruns as they spoiled the season opener for the Glenville State Pioneers at home on Friday afternoon in extra innings, 4-2.
Glenville State (0-1) tallied six hits while Gannon (1-0) finished the game with seven hits with four of them being homeruns.Â
Gannon struck first in the top of the fifth inning as Luke Callahan hit a solo homer off of
Andrue Hughart to right field as the Golden Knights held a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Knights added to their lead in the eighth inning as Nate Cardy homered to left field as they took a 2-0 lead over the Pioneers.
GSC got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning as
Tre'von Smith was called safe on an error by the Golden Knights which saw
Devante Rose cross the plate pulling within one, 2-1.
Glenville State then held Gannon scoreless in the top of the ninth, as they headed into the bottom of the ninth trailing by one, 2-1.
Tyler Phillips then tied it up for the Pioneers on an RBI double scoring
Carter Boswell as we headed into extra innings tied at 2-2.
It wouldn't be until the top of the 12
th before the tie was broken. Gannon's DH Elijah Quiceno would go yard as he put the Golden Knights up, 3-2. Then the next batter for the Golden Knights, Ian Hess, homered to deep left center as the Pioneers fell in their home opener, 4-2.
The Pioneers committed just one error while Gannon had two in the contest.
Tre'von Smith finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI while
Tyler Phillips also had an RBI.
Andrue Hughart, who started the game on the mound, pitched five innings allowing one hit, one run, along with four strike outs.
Adam Riggleman pitched 2.1 innings allowing two hits and one run while
Jose Rodriguez pitched 3.2 innings.
Jesse Weathers would picked up the loss pitched one inning allowing two hits and two runs.
Nate Cardy, Elijah Quiceno, Ian Hess, and Luke Callahan all had homeruns in the game for Gannon.
Cody Hegedus pitched five innings allowing four hits and finished with seven strike outs while Matthew Yough picked up the win pitching one inning and striking out three batters.
Glenville State (0-1) will return to the diamond on Sunday, February 24
th when they host Northwood from the Sue Morris Sports Complex at 11 a.m. Â Â Â
