Lakers Sweep Pioneers in Doubleheader

Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team dropped a doubleheader on Monday afternoon to the Mercyhurst University Lakers.

In the game one, Mercyhurst struck first in the second inning as they held a 1-0 lead. However, Glenville State took a one run lead in the bottom of the third inning. GSC's Zach Bacon doubled to center field scoring Hunter Brown. Later,  Carter Boswell singled as Zach Bacon crossed the plate for an unearned run as they led, 2-1.

The Lakers tied it up at 2-2 in the sixth inning as Alex O'Donnell reached base on an error as Zach Mitchell scored. Later in the same inning Mercyhurst took the lead as Jack Elliot flied out to second base scoring Dominic Cecere as the Pioneers now trailed by one, 3-2.

Glenville State had a shot but three quick outs in the bottom of the sixth and another quick three outs in the seventh saw the Pioneers fall to the Lakers, 3-2.

Carter Boswell went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Zach Bacon and Tyler Phillips both went 1-for-3. Hunter Brown finished the game going 1-for-4.

Adam Riggleman got the start for the Pioneers and he pitched 5.0 innings allowing one earned on three hits while striking out five batters. Jose Rodriguez pitched 2.0 innings giving up two runs while striking out two batters.

Glenville State managed six hits while committing two errors in game one. Mercyhurst finished with three hits and one error.

In the second game of the doubleheader, GSC struck first in the first as Colby Werry scored on a Hunter Brown ground out RBI.

Mercyhurst then got their bats swinging in the second as they added four runs and took a 4-1 lead.

The Lakers added to their lead in the third as Dominic Cecere singled to right scoring Matthew Gibson as they led, 5-1.

Glenville State added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Their second score of the day came off of a Hunter Brown single to left scoring Tre'von Smith and then later Zach Bacon hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Colby Werry as they Pioneers trailed by two runs, 5-3.

Mercyhurst added two more runs in the fifth as they stretched their lead to four runs, 7-3.

In the sixth the Pioneers added a run as Shane Talvacchio was walked with the bases loaded as Tyler Phillips scored but that's as close as GSC would get as they fell in game two, 8-4.

Colby Werry went 2-for-3 and scored two runs while Hunter Brown went 1-for-4 with two RBI's.

Jacob Williams picked up the loss as he pitched three innings giving up five earned runs on seven hits and struck out three batters.

The Pioneers finished game two with five hits and one error while Mercyhurst tallied 12 hits and also committed one error.

Glenville State(0-4) will return to action this weekend as they host Mansfield on Friday, March 1st at 4 p.m.
