Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team used three pitchers as they combined for six strike outs as they defeated Davis & Elkins Senators on Tuesday afternoon, 10-4. It's the first home win of the 2019 season for the Pioneers.
Glenville State (3-13) finished with six hits while Davis & Elkins (0-15) recorded seven hits but committed three errors.
D&E struck first in the first as Shawn Pass hit a solo home run to left field as the Senators led 1-0. The Pioneers however tied it up at 1-1 in the second as
Chase Swain singled to right scoring
Logan Henderson.
The Senators broke the tie in the third as Christian Ortega doubled to left scoring Chase Degroo as they led 2-1.
Glenville State then retook the lead in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs on just one hit as they now led 5-2. The scoring started with
Logan Henderson being walked with the bases loaded which scored
Hunter Brown. Then
Tre'von Smith crossed the plate on a wild pitch and later
Zach Bacon grounded out to second base as he scored
Tyler Phillips. The last run of the inning was scored by
Logan Henderson as the Senators picked off
Chase Swain at first base.
Davis & Elkins cut the Pioneers lead to just one, 5-4, in the fourth as they scored two runs off of two hits.
In the seventh GSC added five runs on three hits and never looked back as they went on to win by six runs, 10-4.
Hunter Brown went 1-for-4 with an RBI while
Chase Swain finished the game 1-for-2 with two RBI's.
Jose Rodriguez earned the win on the mound as he allowed two runs on two hits to go along with a strike out.
Jacob Williams came in and got the save as he pitched 5.0 innings allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.
Glenville State (3-13) will now open up conference play this weekend Saturday, March 23rd as they host West Liberty University at 1 p.m.
