Pioneers Sweep Hilltoppers of West Liberty

Glenville, W.Va. – Sound pitching helped the Glenville State Pioneer baseball team sweep the West Liberty University Hilltoppers on Saturday from the Sue Morris Sports Complex.

West Liberty struck first in game one in the second inning as they scored two runs on three hits as they led, 2-0. Glenville State then knotted it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the second. The first score came as Shane Talcacchio singled to left scoring Logan Henderson and then Carter Boswell hit a sacrifice fly scoring Chase Swain.

GSC then took their first lead, 3-1 in the third as Tyler Phillips scored on a wild pitch.

The Hilltoppers then reclaimed the lead in the fourth as they scored two runs on two hits as they took a held a one run lead, 4-3.

The Pioneers then reclaimed the lead in the sixth at 5-4. Colby Werry struck first as he scored Zach Bacon as he drilled an RBI triple and then the tie was broken by Carter Boswell's sacrifice fly to left field scoring Colby Werry.

The Hilltoppers loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs but Brady Wilkinson, who went the distance, struck Coby Eckstien as the Pioneers took game one, 5-4.

GSC tallied nine hits while giving up eight hits to the Hilltoppers.

Carter Boswell went 2-for-2 with two RBI's while Tyler Phillips went 2-for-3. Colby Werry and Shane Talvacchio each had an RBI.

Brady Wilkinson pitched the entire game allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out eight Hilltoppers.

West Liberty jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first off of one hit.

Glenville State answered in the bottom of the inning as Tre'von Smith homered to right field as Tyler Phillips crossed the plate as the Pioneers pulled within one run, 3-2.

Tre'von Smith then tied it up for the Pioneers at 3-3 in the third inning as he hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Hunter Brown. The Pioneers broke the tie in the on a Zach Bacon home run to left field as GSC now led, 4-3.

West Liberty then reclaimed the lead in the top of the fifth as they scored two runs on two hits as they now led the Pioneers by one, 5-4.

Again the Pioneers broke the tie this time as Tre'von Smith hit a two run home run to right field scoring Tyler Phillips as the Pioneers led 6-5 heading into the sixth inning. But the Hilltoppers then tied it up in the top of the sixth inning at 6-6.

Colby Werry put the Pioneers up by one run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to right scoring Zach Bacon as GSC led 7-6.

West Liberty had a shot in the seventh however Jose Rodriguez came in and earn his first save of the season as he got three quick outs as the Pioneers took game two, 7-6.

Tyler Phillips went 2-for-2 with two RBI's while Tre'von Smith went 2-for-2 with five RBI's as he hit his fifth home run of the season. Zach Bacon finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Glenville State tallied nine hits while West Liberty had 10 hits.

Devante Rose earned the victory on the mound while Jose Rodriguez picked up his first save of the season. Andrue Hughart pitched 5.1 innings allowing six runs on nine hits with a strike out.

Glenville State (5-13, 3-3) will return to action tomorrow Sunday, March 24th as they welcome the Cardinals of Wheeling Jesuit. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
