Nutter Fort, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer baseball team stepped away from conference play on Wednesday and split a doubleheader with the Tigers of Salem University.
Game one of the afternoon saw the Pioneers outhit the Tigers nine to seven however GSC fell on the road to Salem 10-5.
Glenville State committed two errors while Salem University committed just one.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead. Salem scored three runs in the first off of three hits. The Tigers then added four runs in the second off of one hit and two Pioneer errors as GSC trailed 7-0.
The fourth inning saw the Pioneers get on the scoreboard.
Hunter Brown got the scoring started as he hit a single scoring
Tyler Phillips then
Zach Bacon doubled to right field as
Chase Swain and
Hunter Brown both crossed the plate as GSC pulled within four runs, 7-4.
The Pioneers then cut the Tigers lead to just two runs, 7-5, in the sixth when
Tre'von Smith hit his seventh home run of the season as he and
Tyler Phillips scored.
However, Salem added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth as they defeated GSC, 10-5.
Carter Boswell went 1-for-4 while
Tyler Phillips went 2-for-3.
Tre'von Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and his seventh homer of the year.
Zach Bacon finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
Jacob Williams pitched 5.1 innings allowing nine runs on six hits to go with four strike outs. Â
Game two saw Salem take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
The Pioneers bounced back and pulled within one run in the fifth when
Carter Boswell hit a sacrifice fly to right field as
Andrue Hughart scored, 2-1.
Glenville State then tied it up at 2-2 in the sixth inning as
Logan Henderson hit a solo home run to left field.
The Pioneers took the lead for good in the seventh inning when
Tre'von Smith doubled to right scoring
Tyler Phillips as GSC went took game two, 3-2.
Tyler Phillips went 2-for-4 while
Tre'von Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Logan Henderson went 1-for-2 with a solo homer.
Chase Swain pitched 5.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out eight batters.
Devante Rose improved to 2-0 on the mound as he pitched 1.2 innings while striking out four batters and
Colby Werry earned the save on the mound.
Glenville State (7-15, 4-4) will hit the road on Saturday, March 30
th when they travel to Notre Dame College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
