Tre'von Smith's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning would help lift the GSC Pioneer baseball team past the Salem University Tigers on Thursday night, 8-7.
Glenville State recorded nine hits while committing two errors. Salem University finished with 12 hits and one error.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the first inning as they scored two runs on three hits to take a 2-0 lead. Salem then went up 3-0 in the top of the third as they added another run.
The Pioneers scored their first run in the bottom of the third when
Colby Werry hit triple to center field as
Zach Bacon scored as GSC pulled within two runs, 3-1.
Both teams added a run in the fourth inning as the Pioneers now trailed 4-2.
Glenville State took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning as they scored four runs to go up 6-4.
Shane Talvacchio got the scoring started as he hit a double to center scoring
Tre'von Smith and
Carter Boswell. Then
Andrue Hughart doubled to right field as
Shane Talvacchio and
Chase Swain both scored.
Salem University then added a run in the seventh off of two hits pulling within one run, 6-5. The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom of the inning as
Andrue Hughart singled to left scoring
Chase Swain as they now led 7-5.
However, Salem tied the game up at 7-7 in the eighth scoring two runs on two hits.
In the bottom of the ninth
Tre'von Smith would lead the inning off for GSC and he would end the game with a walk-off home run, his ninth homer of the year, as he helped the Pioneers win their 10 game of the year defeating the Tigers, 8-7.
Andrue Hughart went 2-for-4 with three RBI's while
Shane Talvacchio went 2-for-3 with two RBI's.
Tre'von Smith went 1-for-3 and had the winning homerun.
Colby Werry and
Michael Ferguson each recorded an RBI.
Chase Swain earned his second win of the season as he pitched 2.0 innings allowing two runs on two hits while striking out three batters.
Glenville State (10-22) will return to action on Saturday, April 13
th when they travel to the University of Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Golden Eagles.
