Glenville, W.Va. – The Glenville State Pioneer baseball team dropped a doubleheader on the road Saturday to the University of Charleston Golden Eagles.
Game one the Pioneers tallied 13 hits while committing three errors with Wheeling Jesuit finishing with 14 hits and committed six errors but GSC fell, 17-6.
The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the first as
Carter Boswell hit a solo home run. However, UC came back strong in the bottom of the inning as they scored six runs on four hits as they took a 6-1 lead over GSC.
GSC pulled within four runs in the second inning as
Michael Ferguson singled to right field scoring
Logan Henderson making it 6-2.
The Pioneers then pulled within two runs in the third inning, 6-4. The scoring got started when
Shane Talvacchio scored
Tre'von Smith and then
Tyler Phillips scored on an unearned run.
Charleston then added two runs in the fourth as they extended their lead to 8-4.
Glenville State then added two runs in the fifth as they pulled back within two runs, 8-6.
Again the Golden Eagles came right back in the bottom of the fifth as they scored four runs on three hits as they now led 12-6. UC then put the game out of reach in the sixth inning as they scored five runs as the Pioneers fell, 17-6.
Tre'von Smith went 2-for-4 while
Tyler Phillips went 2-for-4.
Michael Ferguson went 2-for-2 with two RBI's.
Brady Wilkinson pitched 4.0 innings allowing eight runs on seven hits with three strike outs.
In the second game of the afternoon GSC racked up nine hits while UC finished 10 hits as the Golden Eagles took it by one run, 6-5.
The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the first when
Tyler Phillips hit a two run home run to left field scoring
Tre'von Smith.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game in the third as they went up 3-2 scoring three runs on four hits.
Glenville State then retook the lead in the sixth inning as
Carter Boswell singled to center field scoring Cobly Werry. Then
Logan Henderson doubled to left center as
Tre'von Smith and
Carter Boswell both crossed the plate as the Pioneers led, 5-3.
UC tied the game up at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs on two hits.
GSC could not score in the top of the seventh as we headed into the bottom of the seventh.
The Golden Eagles ended the game in the seventh as Brice Arrington scored on an error as the Pioneers fell, 6-5.
Tyler Phillips went 3-for-4 with two RBI's while
Logan Henderson finished the game going 1-for-4 with two RBI's.
Jose Rodriguez pitched 1.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out one batter.
Glenville State (10-24, 5-14) will return to action on Monday, April 15
th as they travel to the University of Charleston for game three and four. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
