Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer baseball team split a doubleheader on Thursday at home with the Mountain Lions of Concord University.
Concord would take an early 5-0 lead after one inning. GSC pitcher
Chase Swain walked in a run with the bases loaded the Mountain Lions DH Jordan Clark would clear the bases as he hit a grand slam to center field.
Glenville State got on the scoreboard in the second inning when
Michael Ferguson hit a ground ball second base scoring
Tyler Phillips as they trailed by four runs, 5-1.
Concord added to their lead in the fourth as they scored three runs on four hits as they went up, 8-1.
Tyler Phillips added another run for the Pioneers in the bottom of the sixth as he hit a solo home run while
Shane Talvacchio scored off of a sacrifice fly from
Zach Bacon as GSC pulled within five runs, 8-3.
Concord went on and added four more runs in the seventh inning as they defeated the Pioneers 12-3.
Glenville State tallied eight hits while the Mountain Lions of Concord finished with 15 hits.
Tre'von Smith went 2-for-4 while
Tyler Phillips went 1-for-2 with a solo homerun.
Chase Swain pitched 6.9 innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits with two strike outs.
Game two, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as
Michael Ferguson singled driving in
Colby Werry. The Mountain Lions then tied it up at 1-1 in the second as Josh Adkins drove in Jordan Clark.
Concord broke the tie in the fourth scoring one run on three hits as they took a 2-1 lead.
Tre'von Smith broke the tie and gave GSC a one run lead, 3-2, as he hit his 10
th home run of the year driving in two runs.
That home run by Smith would be the last run scored as the Pioneers took the second game, 3-2.
Glenville State finished with five hits while Concord recorded seven hits.
Tre'von Smith went 1-for-2 with an RBI while
Michael Ferguson went 1-fo-r3 with an RBI.
Andrue Hughart went the entire game allowing two runs on seven hits with one strike out on the way to his second victory on the mound.
Glenville State (11-27, 6-16) will return to the diamond on Monday, April 22
nd as they Concord University for game three and game four. Game three is set for 1 p.m.
