Institute, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer baseball team dropped a doubleheader on the road Sunday at West Virginia State University.
Glenville State tallied six hits with one error in game one as they fell to the Yellow Jackets 5-3. West Virginia State finished with eight hits and an error.
The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
Tyler Phillips hit a two run home run to center field scoring
Tre'von Smith.
West Virginia State responded in the second as they pulled within a run after scoring one run off of one hit as GSC held a 2-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets took their first lead in the fourth inning as they scored four runs on four hits as they now led 6-2.
Glenville State added a run in the sixth as
Tyler Phillips doubled to right scoring
Zach Bacon however GSC would come up short falling 6-3.
Tyler Phillips had an excellent game as he went 3-for-3 with three RBI's.
Jesse Weathers pitched 3.2 innings giving up five runs on eight hits with one strike out.
Game two saw the Pioneers fall by three runs 9-6. The Pioneers tallied 11 hits but committed three errors while West Virginia State finished with 12 hits and one error.
The Pioneers struck first in the first as
Tyler Phillips singled to left field while
Andrue Hughart crossed the plate as GSC led 1-0.
The Yellow Jackets tied it up in the fourth off of a solo home run at 1-1.
Glenville State retook the lead in fifth inning on a double to right field by
Michael Ferguson which scored
Shane Talvacchio as they went up 2-1.
However, WVSU then retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth as they scored three runs on three hits as GSC trailed 4-2.
The Pioneers  tied it up as 4-4 in the sixth inning as
Logan Henderson hit a sacrifice bunt which scored
Tre'von Smith and then
Zach Bacon grounded out to third base as
Ryan Colaw scored.
The Yellow Jackets then broke the game wide open in bottom of the sixth inning as they scored five runs on six hits as they took a 9-4 lead over the Pioneers.
Glenville State added two more runs in the seventh as
Tyler Phillips hit a two run home run scoring
Andrue Hughart but that's a close as the Pioneers would get as they fell 9-6.
Tyler Phillips had another great game as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI's while
Logan Henderson,
Zach Bacon and
Michael Ferguson each had an RBI in the contest.
Jose Rodriguez pitched 5.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits with one strike out.
Glenville State (12-32, 7-21) will return to action on Friday, May 3
rd as they host the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats from the Sue Morris Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
