Pioneers Out Hit Jefferson but Comeback Falls Short

Glenville, W.Va. – Late comeback falls short to Jefferson Rams on Sunday action in a three game series 5-3, though outhitting the Rams 6-2.

Inside The Box Score

Shane Talvacchio lead the Pioneers tallying two hits on the day scoring one RBI, along with Chase Swain and Zach Morris scoring the second and third run of the contest.

Devante Rose, Collin Gross, Johnny Arroyo and Colby Werry all tallied a hit in the competition.

Nicholas Shumek finished the game pitching six innings and allowing just one hit and striking out  five at the plate.

How It Happened

The Rams got on the board early in the second inning as a basses loaded hit to deep right field scored the first three runs of the ball game.

Unable to answer back in the bottom half of the inning, the Pioneers would find themselves in another bases loaded jam but recovered with back-to-back strikeouts and a tag to get out of the pickle.

Shane Talvacchio hit a dingle up the middle to get the bats going for the Pioneers in the bottom of the third. Talvacchio advanced to second on an over thrown ball in a pickoff attempt. Johnny Arroyo then hit a blooper into right field moving Talvacchio to third, though both runners would be left stranded on base.

Down the stretch, Nicholas Shumek would make an appearance as Jose Rodriguez was drawn after four complete innings giving up just one hit.
The Rams extended their lead scoring a man at first with a gap shot double to left field leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Pioneers then got on the board after a Colin Gross double and then later Gross scored off of a Shane Talvacchio RBI single making 4-1 heading into the sixth.
Jump to the eighth inning and Jefferson would add another run off of a sacrifice bunt as they now held a 5-1 lead over the Pioneers.

Colby Werry would get on base with a double to right as he pinch hit for Ryker Rivera to start the bottom of the inning. Then Devante Rose followed that up with a single and then Jefferson University would intentionally walk Tyler Phillips as they bases were loaded with just one out.

Chase Swain drove in Werry off of a sac fly to center field as Zach Morris reached first base on an error by Jefferson's third baseman scoring Devante Rose.  Another error by Jefferson's defense caused GSC to load the bases. However, the inning would end on a Shane Talvacchio fly out to right field.
The Pioneers added two runs on two hits in the inning as they pulled within two runs, 5-3 ending the bottom of the eighth.

However, the Pioneers were unable to add to their score falling to Jefferson 5-3.

Coming Up

The Pioneers will return to action Thursday, February 20th at 2pm at home against Ohio Valley University.
