Glenville, W.Va. – The GSC Pioneer baseball team fell to the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley at the Sue Morris Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon 7-5.
Inside The Box Score
The Pioneers finished with seven hits while committing two errors. The Fighting Scots tallied eights on the day.
Shane Talvacchio had a nice game going 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI's.
Colin Gross finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBI's and
Johnny Arroyo went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Glenville State had five different pitchers throw in the game.
Chase Swain pitched 5.0 innings allowing three hits, three runs, while walking seven batters.
Jose Rodriguez fell to 1-1 on the mound as he pitched 1.0 inning allowing two runs on two hits while also striking out two batters.
How It Happened
Ohio Valley struck first in the first as they tallied just on hit but drove in three runs as GSC committed one error as they fell behind 3-0.
GSC would enter the bottom of the third still looking for their first hit of the ball game. However the Pioneers defense would end the second and third inning with two double plays.
Then in the bottom of the third
Johnny Arroyo would get the first hit for the Pioneers with a single to left field but GSC would leave him stranded on base as they still trailed OVU 3-0.
In the fourth, GSC would earn three quick outs on two marvelous plays. The first by pitcher
Chase Swain on a behind the back catch and then a diving stop at second base by Zack Morris as GSC headed into the bottom of the inning still down 3-0.
Shane Talvacchio then led the bottom of the inning off with a base hit to right field.
Duane Englund then followed that up with a single to left moving Talvacchio into scoring position at second base. Zack Morris then advanced the runners to second and third base on a 1-3 play with two outs. Then
Colin Gross put the Pioneers on the board with a double to left field driving in two runs, Englund and Talvacchio.
Johnny Arroyo then tied the game up for GSC at 3-3 with an RBI single to left scoring
Colin Gross as we headed into the top of the fifth.
Jump to the bottom of the fifth and Shane Talvacchico breaks the tie with a solo home run to left field putting the Pioneers up 4-3 as we headed into the sixth inning.
However, in the top of the sixth OVU would tie the game up and then later took the lead on a passed ball as the Pioneers fell behind 5-4.
In the bottom of the seventh GSC again knotted the game up this time at 5-5 as
Shane Talvacchio hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring
Johnny Arroyo.
Jump to the top of the ninth inning and the Scots would break the tie with two outs as they drove in two runs with a hit to right field as they took a 7-5 lead.
Glenville State had a chance in the bottom of the inning but would have three quick outs as they fell 7-5.
Coming Up
The Pioneers will now turn their attention to the No. 9 team in the county Mercyhurst University. The Pioneers will host the Lakers on Saturday, February 22
nd at 11 am as a part of GSC's Round Robin weekend.
