Double Plays Cause Pioneers to Fall to Mounties

Glenville, W.Va. – The Pioneers fall to Mansfield University 5-7, as Collin Gross's first grand slam does not pull GSC on top dropping the Blue and White to 7-4.
 
Inside The Box Score
 
Ryan Rodriguez and Duane Englund both went 2-for-4 on the day as Englund tallied an RBI.
 
John Peloro and Tre'von Smith each added a hit to the Pioneers offense as Collin Gross scored four RBIs.
 
On the mound, Nicholas Shumek gained the loss for the Pioneers scoring five runs off four hits. Joseph Rubalcaba tallied three strikeouts in three innings pitched.
 
How It Happened
 
Mansfield got an early start over the Pioneers scoring one run in the top of the first. To rebuttal in the bottom half, the Pioneers loaded the bases on three straight walks from Tyler Phillips, John Peloro and Tre'von Smith.
 
Collin Gross then hit a grand slam to put the Pioneers over the Mounties, 4-1.
 
Mansfield answered back quick with four runs given up by Nicholas Shumek to tie the ball game at four a piece as Chase Swain came in to relieve. A bases loaded walk would end the inning as Mansfield took the lead at 5-4.
 
Duane Englund gained the Pioneers second hit with a single to right in the bottom half, however GSC unable to produce.
 
Peloro then opened the bottom of the third with a single to left center but doubled out to end the inning.
 
In the fourth, Ryan Rodriguez and Englund tallied the fourth and fifth hit with a singles to left. The bases would be loaded as Mathew Mangum drew a walk with two outs, though GSC would leave three on heading into the top of the fifth.
 
The Mounties got back on the board in the sixth scoring two runs off two hits to lead 7-4.
 
Looking to comeback, Devonte Rose started the bottom half standing at first with a hit by pitch. Rodriguez then hit a single to center pushing Rose to third and advancing himself to second on the throw to third. Englund then scored Rose from third on a slow dribbler to short to reduce their deficit to 7-5. Mangum then walked but again doubled out to end the inning.
 
Joseph Rubalcaba came into relief in the top of the seventh. Smith in the bottom singled to right to open the Pioneers offensive again. However, would be doubled out to end the inning.
 
Coming Up
 
The Blue and White will face off against Blue Field State in a double header, Thursday March 5th at 3 and 5:30pm.
