GLENVILLE – Glenville's volleyball team came out on the short end Friday night against conference power West Virginia State, but it was a night in which the team brought energy for three full sets, and made the Yellow Jackets earn their points. In the end, State produced a 25-11, 25-15, 25-14 victory over the young Pioneer squad.
After eight points of the first set, the teams were tied at 4-4, but State produced an 8-0 run to gain separation and control the frame. In the second set, Glenville was also close well into the set, down only 12-9. But again State produced a late surge to push their lead to 2-0. In the final set, GSC had leads well into the middle at 9-7 and 10-9. State rallied to close the match, but Coach
Keven John's Pioneers fought and produced several long and entertaining rallies.
Defensively, the Pioneers kept the ball alive on several occasions.
Hannah McKown led the way with 16 digs, followed by
Karlei Shaver with 11.
Julia King posted team high with 20 assists and two service aces, while Shaver and
Skylar Mace led in kills with nine and five respectively.
Glenville falls to 1-6 overall with the loss, and 0-2 in the MEC. State improves to 13-2 overall, and 2-0 in the league.
Glenville returns to action next Tuesday night, traveling to West Virginia Wesleyan. The match starts at 7:00 in the Rockefeller Center.
