GLENVILLE – For the second time in three weeks, Glenville and Salem battled through five heart-pounding sets of collegiate volleyball action. But on this night, GSC prevailed; 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 11-25, 17-15.
After 214 hard-fought points, many of which included rallies with double-figure touches, the outcome was settled after two hours and eighteen minutes of play.
"I am not sure what happened to us in that fourth set, but the team found a way to put it together at the end," Glenville head coach
Keven John noted.
Glenville utilized two late comebacks to establish the two-set advantage. They were down 23-21 late in the first stanza, but scored the final four points. In the second set, Salem was up 19-15 late, but GSC closed with a 10-4 surge to close.
Just like their previous meeting, Salem came off the mat to extend the night. They fought off the Lady Pioneers to take the third set 26-24, then held that momentum and cruised in the fourth 25-11. Down 7-4 in the fifth set, GSC rallied and the set was tied at 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11-12-12, 13-13, 14-14, and 15-15, before the Lady Pioneers powered home two final points to claim the victory.
Skylar Mace led Glenville with 17 kills, followed by
Karlei Shaver with 14, and
Taylin Johnson with nine. The team recorded 12 service aces as a unit, led by Mace with four,
Julia King three, and Shaver and
Hannah McKown with two apiece. Both of McKown's came in the decisive fifth set.
King had a busy night setting, registering 47 assists. GSC had three different players in double figures of the digs category; Shaver with 18, McKown 17, and King 13. Mace and
Sarah Mazzaferro each added eight.
Glenville improves to 2-7 overall with the victory. Salem falls to 3-14.
The Lady Pioneers swing back into MEC play on Friday night, traveling to the University of Charleston.
