Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Pioneers Cage Rams

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Coach Kim Stephens' Lady Pioneer Basketball team utilized a strong second half Sunday afternoon, pulling away for a 95-75 victory over the host West Chester University squad. The win gives Glenville a 2-0 start, and coming home with a clean slate from the season-opening West Chester Tournament.

Unlike Saturday night, GSC came out of the gates fast, grabbing a quick 8-0 lead, and extended the lead to nine at 17-8 and ten points at 21-11. West Chester rebounded to cut into the deficit; the GSC lead was 28-24 at the quarter break, and 50-42 at the half. At this point, GSC took control of the contest, producing a strong third quarter, pushing their advantage to over 20 points by the end of the third quarter at 74-53. A Mashayla Cecil layup with 5:22 remaining in the game gave GSC their largest lead at 82-57. They maintained status quo through the final period, closing their trip to Pennsylvania with the 20-point victory.

Defensive pressure was again a key to the Lady Pioneer victory. On Saturday, GSC forced 24 turnovers against Bloomsburg…a total that played a role in the team holding on for a two-point victory. On Sunday, they forced 20 turnovers against WCU…17 through the first three quarters.

Glenville's offense sported a very balanced attack, as four different Lady Pioneers hit for double figures. They were led by Re'Shawna Stone with 19, Cecil 17, Taychaun Hubbard 15, and Zakiyah Winfield 14. Hubbard and Abby Stoller led in rebounds with nine each, with Deja Atkinson giving some solid minutes off the bench with eight boards. GSC held a strong advantage in team rebounding, holding a 52-36 margin over the Rams in that category.

Winfield led the passing game with six assists, followed by four from Stone. The pair also lead the way in steals, recording three each along with Atkinson.

Glenville shot 46.9% from the field (38-of-81), and connected on ten three-pointers. This came after only hitting five on Saturday. Cecil and Stone each registered three makes from behind the arc, Vendela Danielsson two, Hubbard and Dazha Congleton one each.

Stephens and her staff will now turn their focus to their next toad trip, facing Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Golden Bulls are also 2-0, capturing a pair of victories at this weekend's Albany State Tournament.

Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM at JCSU's Brayboy Gymnasium.
