Lady Pioneers Cruise Past Golden Bulls

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Glenville State utilized a strong 34-point third quarter Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a convincing 91-64 victory at Johnson C. Smith University. Re'Shawna Stone and Zakiyah Winfield each recorded 21 points in the victory, with each veteran going 9-of-15 from the floor.

Johnson C. Smith played it close early, with GSC holding a 13-12 at the first media break. The Pioneers ended the quarter with an 9-2 surge to end the stanza up 22-14. They carried the momentum into the second quarter, pushing the lead to 17 points at 38-21, but the Golden Bulls responded, cutting the deficit to 40-33 at the half.

Early on in the second half, JCSU kept it close, as the score was still 52-41 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. This was the critical stretch of the game, as GSC erupted for a 22-6 run to close the quarter, applying some strong defensive pressure, and getting some quick points in transition. The Lady Pioneer lead ballooned to 31 points at 88-57 with four minutes remaining, and they were able to cruise from there.

After Stone and Winfield's point production, Abby Stoller was also in double figures, just missing a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Deja Atkinson registered nine points. Winfield added six rebounds and three assists, while Dazha Congleton chipped in with a three assists and team-high three steals.

For the second straight game, GSC led in team rebounding by double figures at 51-37. The Pioneers were 35-of-76 from the floor (46.1%), and 9-of-27 from beyond the arc (33.3%). Re'Shawna Stone led in three-pointers made with three…her third consecutive game with that total. The GSC defense forced 27 Golden Bull turnovers, but unfortunately, committed 22 themselves.

Glenville is now 3-0 on the season, while Johnson C. Smith falls to 2-1.

Coach Kim Stephens' squad is back in action next week, opening Mountain East Conference play against the University of Charleston. The two traditional league powers are again ranked 1-2 in the MEC Preseason Poll, and both teams are also Nationally ranked.

Tip-off is set for 2:00pm next Tuesday on McPherson Court inside the Waco Center.
