GLENVILLE – Coach
Kim Stephens' Glenville State College Lady Pioneers utilized a strong start Tuesday afternoon, rolling to a convincing 94-71 victory over the visiting University of Charleston Golden Eagles. This was a matchup between the top two teams in the Mountain East Conference last year, and the same two teams picked atop the MEC in this year's preseason poll.
Glenville came out of the gates fast, scoring the game's first nine points and posting an impressive 28-14 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, they extended that advantage, going into halftime up 53-36.
Charleston carved into that lead in the third quarter, cutting off GSC's drives to the basket, and making shots on their end. By the end of the stanza, the Lady Pioneer lead had been trimmed to 10 points at 70-60. Fortunately for the Glenville faithful, the Lady Pioneers materialized a strong surge of their own in the fourth quarter and won going away.
Re'Shawna Stone led the Glenville offense with 17 points.
Abby Stoller added 15 points, followed by
Deja Atkinson,
Dazha Congleton, and
Mashayla Cecil each with 11. Congleton posted a team-high eight rebounds. Stone led with five steals and four assists.
Charleston was led Clarrissa Francis with 23 points, followed by Dakota Reeves with 13 and Markyia McCormick 10. .
For the game, GSC 37-of-73 (50.7%) from the field, including a strong 11-of-29 from beyond the arc (37.9%). They were able to hold the Golden Eagles to 40.3% shooting from the field (25-of-62), and forced 24 UC turnovers.
Glenville improves to 4-0 overall, and 1-0 in the Mountain East Conference. The University of Charleston falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.
Stephens' squad is back in action next Monday, hosting Pitt-Johnstown at the Waco Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30.
