GLENVILLE – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers played in non-conference action Friday afternoon, posting an 87-54 victory over Wilberforce. With the victory, the seventh ranked squad is now 10-0. It is GSC's first 10-0 start since the 2006 team that began 15-0 (the '81 and '90' teams started 9-0).
GSC produced a strong run late in the first quarter, but struggle generally throughout the first half. Despite leading 46-31 at the halftime break, the Lady Pioneers on shot 14-of-42 for the half (33.3%).
In the third quarter, the shooting woes continued, but the Lady Pioneers materialized a late quarter run to gain further separation, building the lead to 66-42 at the break. They extended the lead to beyond 30 through the fourth quarter to secure the victory, and remain undefeated.
GSC would end the day shooting 37.8% from the field (31-of-82). Their effort was aided by forcing 38 Wilberforce turnovers, which allowed GSC to put up 16 more shots from the floor. Glenville also won the rebound battle 51-49.
Dazha Congleton led the Lady Pioneers with 16 points, followed by 15 from
Re'Shawna Stone and 11 from
Kaylee Pierce. Stone and Pierce each connected on three three-point field goals, as GSC matched their average of ten trifectas a contest.
Tyeshia Taylor led Glenville with nine rebounds, followed by Congleton and
Abby Stoller with six each.
Zakiyah Winfield posted a team-high four assists, and Congleton a team-high five steals.
Malika Wildon and Nia McCormick led Wilberforce with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Glenville now goes to the break with their perfect 10-0 mark. Wilberforce falls to 6-10.
