WHEELING – Glenville State's Lady Pioneers opened 2022 with a bang Wednesday night, rolling to a 141-55 road victory over Wheeling. Coach
Kim Stephens' squad utilized a record-setting 50-point second quarter to spearhead the victory.
Wheeling played the Lady Pioneers tight in the early minutes, and four minutes in, the score was 12-8 GSC. From that point, Glenville produced their game-clinching run. Extending the lead to 30-12 at the quarter break, and to 37-12 in the early minutes of the second stanza, culminating a decisive 25-4 run. The Lady Pioneers would continue to light up the scoreboard in the aforementioned record-breaking quarter, taking an 80-27 lead into the locker room.
Glenville's 50 points broke the old D-II record of 47, which was set by Carson-Newman against Georgia College in 2017. GSC actually broke that record last year against Davis & Elkins, but it was not recognized as not all D-II schools participated in the Covid-shortened 2021 campaign.
GSC's 86 point margin of victory was a Mountain East Conference record, additionally the 141 points scored were the most ever in a game between MEC opponents.
GSC pushed their lead to 109-44 after three periods, and cruised in the late stages with their large advantage. All 15 Lady Pioneers that played found the scoring column, led by
Re'Shawna Stone and
Zakiyah Winfield with 29 each, and
Taychaun Hubbard with 15. This trio also produced a team-high three steals each, with Hubbard leading the team with eight rebounds.
In team stats, GSC exorcised their season-long demons at the free throw line, breaking out with a staggering 34-of-38 performance from the line (89.5%). They were 48-of-95 from the field (50.5%), including an 11-of-30 evening from the field (36.7%). GSC led in team rebounding 51-34, and forced the Cardinals into 40 total turnovers.
Wheeling was led by Lauren Calhoun, who posted another double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She was complemented by Maura Castelluci with 12 points and Shanley Woods with 11.
Glenville improves to 11-0 overall, and 6-0 in the Mountain East Conference. Wheeling falls to 2-9 overall and 2-5 in the league.
GSC continues MEC play on Saturday, hosting West Liberty in the Waco Center.
